Swiss Indoors: Stan Wawrinka to play Roger Federer in quarter-finals

Friends Federer and Wawrinka have battled each other 26 times in the past with the 20-time Grand Slam victor leading an overwhelming 23-3.

The 34-year-old seventh seed, who lost to Andy Murray in last week's European Open final, beat Frances Tiafoe in two hours 32 minutes in Basel.

"I had some trouble with my back in the last game".

Wawrinka hammered 14 aces - his last two in the penultimate game.

"It was a very hard match, we both played so well", Wawrinka said.

Both players hugged at the net, with Tiafoe receiving a standing ovation from the 9,000-strong crowd.

Filip Krajinovic will next take on fifth seed Fabio Fognini after going past Serb compatriot Laslo Djere, 6-1, 6-4.

Tsitsipas stated he did not panic after shedding the opening set to his 70th-ranked opponent in 52 minutes.

"I'm quite confident and comfortable on the court", he said.

"I really don't think about it very much", he went on. I did manage to break him twice. I was serving well and that took some of the extra pressure away. "It can give you an extra reason to fight".

Goffin stands provisional tenth within the race to the eight-man season wrap-up with a ultimate points-earning likelihood subsequent week in Paris.

Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Federer, Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem and Tsitsipas have already booked their places in the ATP Finals, leaving just two places available.
