Pompeo "has told three prominent Republicans in recent weeks that he plans to resign from the Trump Administration to run for the U.S. Senate from Kansas in next year's elections", Time magazine reported on Tuesday.

Pompeo, that has managed to protect a heat relationship with the mercurial president, is now strolling a tightrope as to look as diplomats are understood. It is unclear whether he has discussed any plans to resign with the president.

It's sounding like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo might be the next top White House official to make an exit.

Questioned by reporters, Pompeo declined to deal with Trump's tweet disparaging Marie Yovanovitch, the previous ambassador to Ukraine, Friday, just because she addressed lawmakers. "Pompeo aides previously have denied he was planning to step down". Those briefings, the Times said, "more directly" link the secretary to the Trump administration's efforts to get Ukraine to open investigations into Trump's political rivals and an unsubstantiated theory that Ukraine, not Russian Federation, was responsible for hacking Democratic Party emails in 2016. "I have no doubt that a more fair, open and orderly process of allowing me to read the State Department records would have made this process more transparent", he said. Pompeo has come under fire during the ongoing impeachment hearings against President Trump, with many criticizing him for failing to defend State Department officials and protect US policies against Trump's efforts to politicize foreign affairs.

Both senior diplomats have given damning testimony against Trump, saying he used his leverage as the USA president to push his Ukrainian counterpart to launch a criminal investigation against ex-Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

"Rumors of a Pompeo Senate campaign have circulated for months, and while Pompeo has said repeatedly that he has no intention of running, he has not ruled out a race", Time said.
