John Properties employees and their families who gathered with them at the yearly Christmas party were given a bonus this year.
Edward St John's company has had the distinction of hitting its target of developing 20 million square feet of office, retail and warehouse space across the United States this year.
"What happened tonight is magical, it is life changing - it is really unbelievable", one recipient said. "It is so generous".
The firm's president said the company chose to thank all the employees for helping it achieve its goal.
"I couldn't think of a better way to show it", he commented, adding "Without the team, we are nothing".
At the Christmas dinner - which took place on Saturday - each staff member was then given a red envelope which revealed they would get roughly £38,000 each, depending on how long they'd worked there. And, hold your breath, the total amount given away as bonus summed up to a whopping $10 million.
WTOP reported Monday that Baltimore-based St. John Properties announced the bonuses at the company's holiday party. I do not even have words to properly describe how I felt, it was just fantastic and incredible.
The employees each opened an envelope at the same time that contained the amount of their individual bonus, some of which were upward of $270,000. Larry Maykrantz, the company's president, asked the crowd to an eruption of cheers.
St. John executives joked - nervously, according to Maykrantz - in the weeks leading up to the surprise that they hoped no one would retire after receiving the surprise bonus.
