The Express says United officials met with Sporting Lisbon chiefs in London on Friday to try and thrash out a deal after stepping-up their interest in the attacking midfielder following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's scouting mission to Portugal last week.
However, it must be remembered that the renowned Italian journalist made a very similar sort of claim (Twitter) in the summer transfer window and it did not turn out to be true.

Solskjaer admits he is considering short-term solutions to the club's problems, which were glaringly exposed in their 3-1 League Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City in midweek.
And while he refused to discuss individuals by name, he admitted that he has the backing of the board to go out and get a player of his choosing.
"That's another player that's in a different club and I can't speak about".
"Well, it could happen, it couldn't happen, it depends on whether we find one for the right value, but the background is there". I know we have resources if the right player becomes available for the right money, and they've been so good to me.
