Job Opportunity: Scientific Officer (Publications)

We are looking for a full-time Scientific Officer to work on our in-house publications.

Description

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM), which is located in the National University of Singapore, is Singapore’s only natural history museum. We are looking for a self-motivated and hands-on individual who is responsible for copy-editing and publication of the museum’s scientific and general publications, which includes manuscripts for the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, Nature in Singapore, LKCNHM eBooks, etc., as well as brochures and museum newsletters. The officer also is to provide administrative support in the handling and processing of manuscript submissions, and manage the online resources and publicity for the museum’s publications.

Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree (i.e., Life Sciences, English, Journalism).
  • Very good command of the English language.
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Good knowledge of scientific writing (organismal biology) is an advantage.
  • Adept at use of basic software such as MS Word and Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, website management (some experience with blogging).
  • Able to maintain a professional standard of work, even with looming deadlines.
  • Works well in a team.

Job Opportunity: SCIENTIFIC OFFICER

We are looking for a Scientific Officer to join our Outreach and Education Unit (OEU).

Description

  1. Bringing in revenue to LKCNHM through conducting outreach and educational programmes and work with Museum Development Manager to develop, secure sponsorships from external organisations and execute sponsored educational programmes. Target revenue is to cover own salary, and an additional 20% overheads for LKCNHM.
  2. Coordinate and conduct gallery tours, workshops, guided nature walks and other education and outreach programmes
  3. Assist in developing and marketing education and outreach programmes
  4. Manage enquiries, events and perform basic administrative duties
  5. Curate and maintain the museum’s teaching collection
  6. Write nature publications, including blogs
  7. May involve participation in research work and field trips/expeditions

Qualifications

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Science from a recognised university, majoring in Biology, Zoology, Botany or equivalent.
  2. Preferably 2 years of relevant experience in teaching, conducting workshops and guiding field trips
  3. Good knowledge of biology, nature and Singapore and Southeast Asian biodiversity.
  4. Good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  5. Able to teach all levels of students and members of the public.
  6. Must be able to work on weekends and public holidays, and at late or very early hours.
  7. Familiarity with basic computer programmes such as Microsoft Office and Google web apps.
  8. Willing to learn and have a passion for nature and the environment.
  9. A valid Singapore driver’s license and the ability to swim proficiently will be an advantage

Job Opportunity: Management Assistant Officer (1 Year Contract)

We are looking for a Management Assistant Officer:

 

Description
  1. Provide office administration support services such as liaising with vendors and term contractors to order office supplies and maintain office facilities to ensure smooth operation of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM).
  2. Act as point of contact for all incoming administrative telephone calls, emails, faxes and enquiries.
  3. Provide logistical (and organisational) support for events/meetings/seminars (both internally and with external parties), and be able to prepare minutes for these meeting when necessary.
  4. Provide secretarial and administrative support to the Head of Department (assist with calendar, arrangement of meetings, assist with travel arrangements).
  5. Assist in finance and accounting processes including accounts payable/receivable, procurement of goods/services, Income Collection System, and ensuring they comply with all financial and purchasing procedures.
  6. Assist in Human Resource related matters such as recruitment, appointments, and annual review exercises.
  7. Perform various tasks using SAP-based systems, and TRAC.
  8. Provide assistance to, and answer queries from, LKCNHM staff members relating to administrative matters (e.g., purchasing, leave, claims).
  9. Attend to all general enquires.
  10. Any other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications
  • Diploma/professional qualification related to Business/Administration/Accounting
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel and Outlook) and SAP
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills

Job Opportunities: Museum Officer & Scientific Manager

MUSEUM OFFICER

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) of the National University of Singapore invites applications for the Museum Officer position. The successful candidate must be highly motivated and passionate about specimen-based research on Southeast Asian biodiversity and educating NUS students about the biodiversity of Singapore and the region. As such, we are looking for a responsible and reliable good communicator who is a multi-tasker and team player. Salary and benefits are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. The successful candidate will develop an internationally competitive research programme on Southeast Asian biodiversity and will be responsible for the curation and development of a section of the museum’s collection.
  2. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing and teaching one university-level module on biodiversity as well as helping co-teaching another module when necessary.
  3. Perform service for the museum, which includes outreach, research management, consultancies, etc.

 

Requirements

  1. PhD degree and expertise in specimen-based taxonomic or systematic research
  2. Preferred areas of specialization are marine or terrestrial invertebrates (including insects)
  3. Singapore citizenship or Singapore permanent residency (PR) preferred
  4. Strong English writing and verbal skills
  5. Documented ability to multi-task and work well in a team

Desirable skills:

  1. Experience in applied biodiversity research (e.g., consultancies), conference or workshop organization, museum curation, journal editing, research management or administration

  • Curation and development of the collection of LKCNHM in an area with high curatorial and research needs (e.g., marine invertebrates, terrestrial arthropods).
  • Supervision of the introduction of new curation activities such as a consolidated loan system, new preservation techniques, sub-sampling of specimens for cryo-preservation, data-basing, and specimen digitization
  • Assistance with consultancies, collection acquisitions, research management, and answering research questions by the public

EXECUTIVE SECRETARY POSITION AVAILABLE

The National University of Singapore (NUS), Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum invites applications for the Executive Secretary position for the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). We seek suitable candidates from around the world. The successful applicant will be a staff member at the NUS. Salary and benefits will commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial appointment will be for one year, and renewable for a maximum of two years. Employment after that period will depend both on performance and availability of funds.

Major responsibilities of the position are:

1. Coordinating activities of the ICZN, under the direction of and in consultation with the ICZN Council (headed by the President), including
a. Communicating with Commissioners of the ICZN on the efficient conduct of routine business
b. Communicating with the scientific editor of The Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature, maintaining electronic sites where documents may be shared among Commissioners of the ICZN (such as those relevant to cases under consideration and to the Fifth Edition of the International Code of Nomenclature)
2. Tracking and inventorying public outreach of the ICZN by Commissioners
3. Conducting and managing elections of members of the ICZN Council and of Commissioners, under the direction of the ICZN Council
4. Acting as spokesperson for the ICZN as and when directed by the ICZN Council
5. Other related ICZN tasks as assigned by the President of the ICZN

The Executive Secretary will not have responsibilities for:

1. Activities that are the purview of a Commissioner of the ICZN
2. Fundraising for the ICZN
